Interview with El Ligero
The following interview has been produced with the assistance of El Ligero’s personal translator.
1. How long have you been wrestling and how did you become involved?
I have been wrestling professionally now for six and a half years and have been training for seven and a half years. I started out at a training school in Sheffield that I discovered when I first arrived in this country, called Elite Pro Wrestling. There I was trained by Alan Johnson and Johnny Moss and later in my career I was introduced to Charming Don Charles and SAS and my career improved a lot from that point onwards.
2. Who do you look up to in the current UK scene?
I think that there is a lot of great talent amongst my peers in the UK scene and the people that I look up to are those that are able to make a full-time living out of wrestling like I have just about managed to achieve—people like Doug Williams—and I also look up to people who influenced me to get better and have given me advice, such as Spud and Jack Storm.
3. You are recognised as one of the top cruiserweight wrestlers in the UK today. Who do you enjoy working with in that division and why?
First of all, thank you very much for the compliment! Secondly, cruiserweight matches are some of my favourite to compete in, as the UK division is full of innovative and creative people that I really enjoy working with to create something different and unique, such as Bubblegum, Bingo Ballance, Joey Hayes, Martin Kirby and Kris Travis.
4. What are your current thoughts of the UK scene?
There are certainly negative aspects to the current UK scene, but I much prefer to look at the positive things in life and we have a generation of young talent willing to learn, improve themselves and achieve their dreams, as well as many companies putting on spectacular shows, such as SAS Wrestling, PBW, GPW, 1PW, IPW:UK, IwW and many many more!
5. What are your current thoughts of the Scottish scene?
One thing that I always tend to tell people when asked, is that it seems to me that the higher north in the UK you go, the more receptive and responsive and just plain crazy and enthusiastic the crowds are! I love coming up to Scotland, as I know the crowds are so much fun to work in front of!
6. How do you compare PBW with other companies in England and Europe?
PBW is one of my favourite places in the UK to wrestle, as it is run so professionally and to a superb level and that makes the talent feel special and provides a much better atmosphere both in front of a crowd and behind the scenes. The crowds are always white-hot, and the roster is brimming with potential and talent.
7. What advise would you give to anyone looking to break into the wrestling business in the UK?
Well, first of all, I would recommend that anyone wanting to break into the UK scene finds a good quality wrestling school that has a good reputation. Have a look at the students that the school has produced and you can see how good the trainers are. The second bit of advice I would give is to make sure you are in shape, as wrestling is a hell of a tough business!
8. Where do you see El Ligero in three years?
Still doing that clapping head-scissors most likely! [laughs]
9. Where would yo like to see El Ligero in three years?
I would have liked to have been abroad even more and I would hope that debuting for Pro-Wrestling NOAH on June 21 would help open some avenues up with that. Other than that, still enjoying this business that i love, and still relatively healthy. [laughs]
10. What are your plans for the coming year in PBW?
Still looking to wow the PBW faithful, and any bit of gold I can get hold of is most welcome.
Ariba!
